Your brand,
inside the mystery.

The Chalk Outline is the only newsletter where readers wait all week to find out if they were right. A sponsored case is a brand integration inside that moment.

What we are

Every Monday at 6 AM, The Chalk Outline drops a new fictional murder mystery to tens of thousands of detectives. Clues release Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday at 11:59 PM, readers submit their verdicts. Friday morning, the case is solved.

Open rates outperform the newsletter benchmark by a wide margin because subscribers treat the emails as a weekly puzzle they are actively solving, not as content they consume passively. Readers read. Readers respond. Readers compete on a leaderboard. Readers refer their friends to keep up.

This is not true crime voyeurism. Every case is entirely fictional. The mood is drawing-room mystery, noir, and puzzle craft — the tradition of Christie and Doyle, rendered in a modern weekly format.

Who's reading

Engaged. Educated. High household income. The detective-reader skews older than most puzzle-app audiences and wealthier than most newsletter audiences. They buy what they're told to buy by people they trust.

Weekly cadence
5×
Emails per week. Monday case. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday clues. Friday reveal.
Open rate target
45%+
Above industry benchmarks. Subscribers open because they're solving, not scrolling.
Submit rate

Of opens convert to a formal verdict submission. Active participation, not passive consumption.
Detective Profile

Age 35–65. Household income above $85,000. Reads two or more newsletters in parallel. Has finished at least one novel this quarter. Watches prestige TV, not reality TV. Follows their local sports team but also follows a podcast no one in their office has heard of.

How brands appear

Four ways to partner. All formats are clearly marked as sponsored and keep the mystery intact. Nothing inside a sponsorship ever spoils or disrupts the weekly case.

The Full-Week Sponsorship
Flagship

A single brand anchors an entire week's case. Presence at the top of every Monday through Friday email: "This week's case is presented by —". Short dedicated copy block within each send. Link in every email footer for the week.

Includes: Five dedicated email placements · Logo and copy in Monday case opener · Top-of-leaderboard callout Friday morning · Archive credit in perpetuity on the case page
The Evidence Placement
Integrated

Your product, woven into the story. A character drives your car to the scene. A note is written on your stationery. A brand of whiskey sits on the sideboard. Subtle, atmospheric, and — because the story is fiction — never implied to be causally connected to the crime.

Includes: Natural-language integration across 2–3 emails of one week's case · Disclosure in the Friday reveal footer · Optional linked mention in the archive
The Friday Reveal
High-visibility

A single sponsored placement inside the Friday reveal email — the highest-opened send of the week. Appears after the reveal, before the leaderboard. Attention is at its peak; readers are celebrating or commiserating, and your brand is in the room with them.

Includes: One Friday reveal email · Native copy block with your link · Image placement · Performance report delivered the following Monday
The Footer Affiliate
Always-on

Long-term affiliate partnerships for brands whose products genuinely fit the detective-reader: true crime books, mystery streaming services, notebooks, pens, lamps, whiskey, coffee. One affiliate slot per email, rotated across a small portfolio of longtime partners.

Includes: Natural placement in every Monday case opener · Shared rotation with 3–4 other partners · Monthly performance report

How it works

Four steps from first email to delivered campaign. Most sponsored cases go from signed to live within three weeks.

1
Introduction

You email hello@. We send the media kit and a scheduling link. Fifteen minutes on a call to understand what you're hoping to achieve.

2
Proposal

Within 48 hours of the call, a written proposal with format, week, creative requirements, rate, and success metrics. Yes, no, or edit.

3
Production

You send assets. We draft copy that fits the case. You approve or edit. Final version signs off ten days before send.

4
Delivery & Report

Emails send as scheduled. Monday after the week closes, you receive a report: opens, clicks, engagement, leaderboard mentions, any reader feedback.

Who we work with

We are deliberately selective. The newsletter is built on subscriber trust — we won't jeopardize that for any single partner, regardless of budget.

Good fit

  • Publishing houses, especially mystery and literary fiction imprints
  • Streaming platforms with prestige crime and mystery content
  • Podcast networks with true crime, narrative, or investigation programming
  • Premium consumer goods with a mature audience — whiskey, coffee, stationery, reading lamps
  • Subscription services adjacent to reading, puzzling, or intellectual leisure
  • Tourism boards for mystery-associated destinations — English countryside, New Orleans, Savannah

Not a fit

  • Actual true crime content — real victims, real cases, real families
  • Gambling, sports betting, or day-trading apps
  • Supplements or health products making clinical claims
  • Political advocacy or campaign advertising
  • Any product that requires us to make a causal connection to violence
